Every spring, SU throws its Block Party, allowing SU students and the general public to attend a concert organized by University Union (a student-run program that brings various events to campus). This year, they featured up-and-coming artist Role Model as the opener for Latto, a rapper known best for her song “Big Energy.” I was privileged to photograph the event from the press pit alongside many talented SU students.
I got to watch the show from the sidelines and the energy that Role Model and Latto radiated into the crowd. Role Model performed some of his biggest hits for those at the Dome. Most notable were “Sally, When The Wine Runs Out,” a cover of “Somebody Else” by The 1975, “Old Recliners,” and “Deeply Still in Love.” During “Deeply Still in Love,” Tucker changed one of the lyrics to “Deeply still in love with you, Syracuse,” causing the crowd to go wild.
Role Model set the stage perfectly for Latto. Once she came out, the crowd was more than warmed up. Groups of friends were dancing at the edges of the pit, while others hugged the barricade, singing along with her. Her backup dancers only amplified her high-energy performance. I didn’t know much about her going into the show, but her fans showed up and demonstrated the kind of excitement and charisma she brings to a performance.
SU Block Party is an event to look out for — not only do you get to see an amazing show, but you also get to meet fans, students, and people who are just as excited and ready to have a good time as you are.
