Le Moyne College is in the midst of putting on a production of the little-known play Airness by Chelsea Marcantel, which opened Thursday night at the Performing Arts Center to a loud and interactive audience.
The show follows Nina, a woman getting her life off the ground who begins to pursue “air guitar” — playing an imaginary version of the instrument — to spite a former partner after a failed romantic relationship. She meets an assortment of air guitarists competing to make nationals, including Shreddy Eddy, Golden Thunder and Facebender, and hones her air guitar skills alongside them throughout the story.
Other important characters worth mentioning are Cannibal Queen, the announcer, and D Vicious, who takes on the role of the villain.
It is a comedic and emotional piece, with enough drama to satisfy those looking for it. Rehearsals began Jan. 13. In a relatively short process for a school production, Airness has come together in a complete way and is ready to entertain audiences.
This was proven at Wednesday night’s performance, when the crowd reacted with audible laughter and surprise, fueling the actors onstage.
The play is directed by Scott Scaffidi, who has numerous shows under his belt at Le Moyne. His most recent directing project was the Gifford Family Theatre’s production of Dragons Love Tacos, and his name can be found on the walls of the Performing Arts Center in production credits across campus.
Airness carries a strong moral, telling a tale not only of success through perseverance but also of childlike wonder and the importance of preserving it. Many are impacted by the guitar in some way, whether through a particular genre or personal connection, and all have a need to express that emotion.
Beyond that, Airness explores conveying that emotion and loving things for what they are, even if they are imaginary. Everyone needs an outlet, and in this story, air guitar is that outlet.
The remaining shows are tonight, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., all at the Performing Arts Center.
Tickets are $20 for general admission, $10 for Le Moyne staff and $5 for students. Discounted Valentine’s Day couples tickets are also available.
The cast includes Aubrey Dunham as Nina; Joseph Calveric as D Vicious; Tobi Gil-Taylor as Facebender; Ethan Jackson as Golden Thunder; Sophia Tripp as Shreddy Eddy; Destiny Jimenez as Cannibal Queen; and Ava Campione as the announcer.
