On April 18 th , 2024, Le Moyne College had the privilege of hosting a special guest, acclaimed author Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, who delighted us with a live reading from his latest book, “Chain-Gang All Stars” along with another book “Friday Black.” Adjei-Brenyah’s unique reading style and interactive approach made the event unforgettable, captivating the audience from start to finish.

From the moment Adjei-Brenyah took the stage, it was clear that this would be no ordinary reading. His dynamic presence and enthusiastic delivery immediately drew us in, setting the stage for an immersive literary experience. His charismatic personality engaged the listeners to tune in. He delivered a few jokes before the reading about the irony of the reading taking place in the chapel because his protagonist in the book is around the age Jesus passed away. His sense of humor allowed the audience to feel comfortable in the auspicious space.

One of the most striking aspects of Adjei-Brenyah’s reading was his inventive use of audience participation. Throughout the reading, he engaged us by incorporating call-and- response elements that brought the story to life in unexpected ways. This interactive element not only deepened our connection to the stories being told but also created a sense of collective involvement and shared experience among everyone present.

Moreover, the incorporation of call-and-response added layers of texture and rhythm to the reading, enhancing the emotional impact and resonance of the narratives. It allowed us to actively engage with the themes, characters, and conflicts presented in the stories, inviting us to reflect on our own experiences and perspectives in relation to the material being shared.

For instance, Adjei-Brenyah cleverly integrated chants from the crowds portrayed in “Chain-Gang All Stars” into the reading. Whenever he mentioned the protagonist’s first name, Bishop, we eagerly responded with a shout of “Bishop,” mirroring the fervent energy of the book’s scenes. This interactive element not only kept us engaged but also deepened our connection to the characters and their experiences.

Another highlight of Adjei-Brenyah’s reading was his ability to create an immersive atmosphere through sensory engagement. During a poignant scene where a group of friends mourns the loss of a loved one, he invited us to hum a tune while he read aloud. As he described the characters honoring their friend’s memory with a heartfelt speech, our collective humming added an emotional depth to the scene, enhancing our understanding and empathy for the characters’ grief.

By incorporating these interactive elements, Adjei-Brenyah transformed the reading into a multisensory experience that resonated deeply with the audience. His innovative approach not only captured our attention but also allowed us to actively participate in the storytelling process, forging a memorable and meaningful connection with the narrative. This shared experience made him stand out as an incredible writer and storyteller.
