Le Moyne College Athletics is introducing its very first spirit club, set to launch during the upcoming Fall 2027 semester. This newly founded spirit club will include a dance team, a cheer team, and will feature the school’s mascot, Iggy the dolphin.
The three elements of the spirit club will first appear at both men’s and women’s home basketball games, according to Athletic Director Phil Brown. However, Brown’s intention is to elevate the use and presence of this spirit crew.
Currently, on the Le Moyne campus, there is one dance team that serves to bring energy and spirit to the crowd during halftimes and timeouts at home basketball games. However, after stepping into his new position as athletic director, Brown said he had hopes for something larger.
Brown wants to provide students with more opportunities to either create spirit or experience it. He says the potential for other additions to the spirit club, such as a kick line, pom team, and even a pep band, have been discussed. It is the hope of Brown to bring a stronger sense of community and spirit to Le Moyne athletics.
The goal of the spirit club is to encourage Le Moyne students to attend events at the athletic center and be excited to be there. Coming from a larger school himself, Brown said he wants to bring that same level of spirit and excitement to the Le Moyne campus.
According to Brown, there is already a new hire in place with a cheer background to help begin facilitating the launch of the spirit club. As for the current dance team, while it is currently student-run, Brown hopes to shift to a more professional approach, granting every group within the spirit club access to more resources and leaders.
Given that Le Moyne has been slowly transitioning into this new Division I era, Brown said he has the intention of extending the same programming for the dance team and the additional spirit groups as well.
The new spirit program is expected to bring a stronger sense of energy and engagement to Le Moyne athletics.
