With temperatures expected to reach the 60s this Saturday, students at Le Moyne College are more than ready for a break from the cold.

It’s been more than four months, going back to early November, since Syracuse — and Le Moyne College — enjoyed a 60-degree day, according to Bryan Greenblatt, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

That marks a stretch of about 125 days, equivalent to the length of an entire semester — a whole lot of it spent in freezing, snow-covered conditions.

The only downside for Saturday: Greenblatt warns we might also get rain.

Maya Carpenter, a junior, has been looking forward to this warmer weather for many weeks.

Like many students at Le Moyne, Carpenter sees the first warm weekend as more than just a brief flash of good weather. It is a sign that a winter that brought more than 130 inches of snow to Syracuse may finally be coming to an end.

“I’ve been counting down the days,” she said. “The campus feels more alive (in pleasant weather), and it makes the end of the semester feel a little more exciting instead of stressful.”

We asked some students and staff how they will spend this warmer weekend:

• Carpenter said, “After all the cold and gray weather, I’m just excited to be outside without freezing.” When asked what she plans to do with the first warm day, she kept it simple. She wants to spend as much time as possible outside.

“I’m hoping to go for a long walk and just enjoy the weather,” Carpenter said. She also mentioned possibly having a picnic with friends, bringing snacks and music, and just relaxing in the sun. “It’s the kind of day where you don’t really need big plans. Just being outside is enough.”

• Aidan Mingoia, class of 2026, a communications and film studies major, said: “Honestly, I don’t think my itinerary would be changing from the usual. Probably going to, you know, stay back at my place at home and continue working on stuff. Maybe I’ll get a little crazy and open a window though.”

• Simone Schwarz-Eise, a sophomore business major, plans to train outside since she plays on the women’s soccer team at Le Moyne. She mentioned that the warmer weather brings a more positive energy to campus. Simone also said she would probably grab an iced coffee and take a break from schoolwork to enjoy the day.

• Jezmeriah Espinosa, a sophomore: “I’ll probably just sit outside and study.”

• Kiersten Hines, a junior history major, said the first thing she wants to do is gather her roommates, take a walk around Green Lakes and maybe grab something to eat after that.

• Jocie Daley, a sophomore studying psychology, plans on tanning if the rain is not too bad — but ultimately she is looking forward to taking a long walk. “It brings me immense joy,” she said.

• Paul Walintukan, a sophomore physics major, is just eager to finally wear shorts again — simply because they are so comfortable.

• Ibrahim Maalim is the area director of Foery Hall. He plans on catching up on sleep this weekend. When he wakes up, he is going to spend time on self-care, such as cleaning his apartment and potentially taking a walk around campus.

• Camryn Hubbard, a sophomore English literature and creative writing major: “I will be working on my feminist periodicals essay for my Feminist Press class.”

• Jade Paul, a senior: “My plan for the nice weather that’s coming up soon is to go on more walks — specifically walking toward Oneida Lake, which is close to my house.”

• Cody Doolittle, a sophomore environmental studies major, says he plans to go on a hike somewhere in the area on the first warm day this year.

• Emily Marshall, a junior sociology major, summed it up for all of us. She is simply ready — so ready — for a break in this weather, and she said:

“I would probably cry because it is so warm outside.”
