Le Moyne College recently introduced new traffic signage on the road just past the physical plant, behind the softball field. Three tracks of speed bumps and several signs warning drivers to proceed with caution through the area have been added.
Joseph Della Posta, the Director of Communications and Public Affairs for Le Moyne College, explained the reasoning behind the additions.
“The signage and speed bumps were installed to caution all motorists to slow down when using that road and to be aware of their surroundings,” Della Posta stated. “The roadway is also used as a walking path, so it’s important that those using the road go slowly and [to] be aware of other traffic, whether it’s vehicular or pedestrians.”
When asked if there were any specific incidents or concerns raised by the campus community that impacted this decision, Della Posta affirmed that the change was a strictly proactive measure.
“The safety devices were installed as a preventative measure given how many students, employees and event attendees use the roadway,” Della Posta noted. “Before they were installed, there were no traffic calming devices on that roadway.”
While the intent of these measures is to increase safety for all members of the campus community, not everyone has been pleased with the change. Junior Tommy Mauer voiced frustration over the additions, specifically the placement of the speed bumps.
“I personally have never experienced any hazardous driving in that area of school,” Mauer said. “I think it’s an unnecessary annoyance that doesn’t provide a ton of [benefit]. It would be alright if there was only one.”
Della Posta noted the possibility of increasing traffic calming measures to other areas on campus in the future.
“Le Moyne is committed to doing whatever we can to help maintain a safe environment for students and all members of the campus community,” Della Posta stated. “This is one example of a step we have taken to improve safety on and in close proximity to campus.”
