After a successful test run last fall, Major Arcana’s Fringe Fest will be held this weekend in the Marren Theater at the W. Carroll Coyne Center for the Performing Arts with an entirely new rotation of content. The show is composed of seven separate short performances, each one student-led and directed and spanning an impressive range of genres.
Audience members will find the show has something for everyone, whether it is a rendition of High School Musical’s rousing “Stick to the Status Quo” (directed by Mary Kuhlmann) or a story of two dueling narrators-in-training (written and directed by Francesca Smith). Additional plays include a dark political satire piece (directed by George Vasilev), a ghost story at Grand Central Station (directed by Katie Rotondi), a collection of testimonials from the homeless (directed by Mary Medina), a dance number depicting the stages of life through movement (directed by Sarah Strauss), and a bar scene interested in gender roles and society (directed by Chloe Budziszewski).
What stands out about this show is the fact that it is entirely student-run, from the directing to the lighting, props, sound design, set, and sometimes even the script itself. An extremely dedicated group of theatrically-minded individuals have banded together, despite their busy schedules, to help each other’s dreams come to fruition, and that in and of itself deserves some wonder and praise.
Performances will be hosted at 8 p.m. from Nov. 14-16, with an additional matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Nov. 16. The show is free, but seats are extremely limited, so if you plan on attending, make sure to arrive early!
