Le Moyne freshman guard McKayla Roberts, a native of North Syracuse who attended Cicero-North Syracuse High School, has been voted as the best freshman in Division II women’s basketball for the 2016-17 season. The voting process took place on HEROSports.com, where Roberts received 1679 of 3606 total votes.

Listed at 5 feet 4 inches tall, Roberts has started every game for the Dolphins this season. She is averaging 12.5 points, 5.59 assists, 3.72 rebounds and 1.5 steals per outing. She leads the team in points, assists, steals, minutes per game, and three-point field goal percentage. Roberts is currently second on her team in field goal percentage and free throws made.

The freshman standout currently leads the Northeast-10 Conference in total assists and assists per game. Her assist-to-turnover ratio is fourth best in the conference (1.8). Her total assist number sits at 16th best in the country and her assist per game average is the 20th best in Division II.

Roberts has been named Northeast-10 Conference Spalding Rookie of the Week on six different occasions. She’s the first player to receive this honor six times since Bentley University’s Jacqui Brugliera did it seven times during 2010-11 season.

“It is a huge honor to win freshman of the year,” said Roberts. “It is a major accomplishment and it makes me feel proud.”Roberts credits her teammates and coaches for helping her accomplish this in her freshman year.

“I try to be the best all around player I can be for my team with assists, scoring, steals and whatever my team needs me to do,” said Roberts. “I always have high expectations for myself, but coming into my freshman season there were a lot of unknowns. I just came in with a mindset to work hard and had a lot of help and support from my teammates and coaches.”

This has undoubtedly been an incredible rookie season for Roberts. She has been an exceptional addition to the Le Moyne women’s basketball team. Her teammates and fans have much to look forward to in her years left with the program. She looks to continue her stellar play for the remainder of the season with the help of her team.
The Dolphins will play Southern Connecticut State University this Saturday, Feb. 18, at 12 p.m. on their home court before finishing the regular season against the University of New Haven at home on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
