While the rest of the school was enjoying their spring break, our Men’s lacrosse team was busy racking up two more victories, while holding on to the #1 ranking in the Division II polls. Their first of two matchups over break was a matchup against Dowling College that took place inside the Carrier Dome.
Le Moyne started the game out strong, scoring six goals in the first quarter, taking an early lead over the Golden Lions 6-2. Dowling would respond by scoring four goals each in the second and third quarters, taking a 10-9 lead over the Dolphins heading into the fourth quarter. From there, the game was tightly played by both teams, as they stepped up the defense. Dowling scored first to take a two goal lead with 11:55 to play in the game. Le Moyne answered with a goal at the 9:34 and then with nine seconds left score the tying goal, sending the game to overtime. Three minutes into overtime, Sophomore Mike Jenkins scored the game winner, keeping the Dolphins undefeated. Jenkins had four goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Joe Corapi had three goals as well as senior attackman Chris Button.
Their second matchup over break was again a close game but Le Moyne played a balanced game overall and was able to travel to Bentley to come away with the victory 10-6. Going into the half, Le Moyne was in the lead at the half of what was a low scoring game altogether 4-1. Bentley was able to get back into the game with a four goal third period but Le Moyne countered in the fourth quarter with their own four-goal quarter. Senior midfielder Kam Bumpus had three goals for the Dolphins. Kevin Kelly, Mike Jenkins and Chris Button all contributed with two goals apiece for the Dolphins. Junior goalkeeper Pat Brothers had nine saves for the Dolphins while only allowing six goals.
While the #1 ranked Dolphins are on pace to have a good season, they were recognized for their efforts last year while on their way to winning the National title. The Dolphins were recognized at halftime of the Syracuse-Western Michigan game in Buffalo on Thursday by the NCAA for their National Title run. Next for the Dolphins is a home matchup against NE-10 opponent Merrimack slated for Mar. 25. Their next game after that would be a road game against another NE-10 opponent St. Anselm on Saturday, Mar. 29. If Le Moyne can get past these next two opponents, they could possibly set up a matchup of #1 vs. #2 on April 5th when Adelphi comes to Le Moyne. That matchup could possibly be a preview of things to come.
