Now that the weather is finally starting to get warmer, spring is now in full spring. With the winter coming to an end, a great way to clean out your body and begin fresh is to do a detox. A great way to begin to implement a detox into your diet is to start by switching up what you drink in the morning, and even before bed.
Hot lemon water removes toxins from the body, and is a simple and easy addition to any daily diet. This form of lemon juice can aid in digestion, heartburn and nausea. You can even continue to drink lemon water throughout the day to keep your body in check all day. In the morning I usually drink the Yogi brand Lemon and Ginger tea, which helps wake my body up and gets me ready for the day ahead. Another great lemon water mix that I love is from the cookbook, The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook by Amrita Sondhi. Boil 1 cup of boiling water, and mix in the juice of half of a lemon, pinch of cayenne pepper, and if necessary maple syrup or honey to taste.
Turmeric tea is another great option for cleansing. A part of the ginger family, turmeric has recently been found to help people with Alzheimer’s disease, and even to possibly prevent colorectal cancer. It is more commonly known for helping the liver and easing muscle soreness and joint pain. Yogi Teas has a Joint Comfort tea that is made with turmeric, and also makes a green tea muscle recovery option as well. These can be found at Wegmans, Wal-Mart and NaturThyme stores. To make your own version of turmeric tea, all you would need is one teaspoon of turmeric, teaspoons of honey and four cups of boiling water. This recipe can make up to four servings of the tea, and is great to be used to be put away for a day of cleansing.
Ginger in teas and drinks is another herb that helps aid the body, cleansing the system. Ginger is known to not only help stomach pain and digestion, but can also help prevent migraines, nausea, possibly lower cholesterol, and can even aid in inflammations. There are numerous ginger teas available by a number of tea brands. Tazo Tea has a green ginger tea and spicy ginger tea, Traditional Medicinals makes an organic golden ginger tea and ginger aid tea, and Yogi has a ginger tea, lemon and ginger, and green tea with lemon and ginger. I have listed my favorite ginger tea recipe below, which also is found in the cookbook The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook. This recipe is perfect for a mid-afternoon pick-up and kick starts the body for the remainder of the day. Teas are a perfect way to detox the body, and can be simply added to any diet.
