The Le Moyne women’s tennis team returned back to court Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24 for their first match of the spring season. The Lady Dolphins matched up against a non-conference opponent, Daemen College. After two and half hours of play, Le Moyne won 9-0.
The match started with the Dolphins sweeping the Wildcats in doubles. Juniors Kelly Falconer and Kristie Kenny grabbed the first point of the match, with an impressive 8-0 win at third doubles. Second doubles also won 8-0 and first doubles snagged the final doubles point, winning 8-3. Communication and consistent play powered the ladies through the beginning of the match.
“It was great to start out the spring season with a win,” Kenny commented. “It allowed us to work on strategies and improve our game.”
Moving then to singles, Le Moyne kept up the momentum. The ladies only dropped a combined total of nine games in 13 sets. Kenny won at second singles 6-0 6-0. Third singles also won 6-0 6-0. Sophomore Margaret La Fleur finished with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles.
Freshman Allison Jones and sophomore Jessica Geary both finished in a winning-fashion at the fifth and sixth singles spots, coming out 6-0, 6-0 as well. Veteran player and senior captain Rebecca Black exemplified her experience and determination by capturing her 21st singles win of her college career winning 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 at first singles.
Coach Karyn Rodems had many positive notes to take away from her team’s victory. She commented that this match was a test of her players’ true patience.
“Staying patient with their shots, staying consistent in their rallies, getting their first serve in, and when they had the opportunity, move into the net and end the point with a volley- strategy,” said Rodems. “Knowing the strategy in being patient with a less skilled player and playing to one’s strength won our match yesterday against Daemen College.”
The women’s tennis team is now looking ahead to their next match.
“My expectations remain the same as we move forward in this spring semester,” Rodems added. “Continue building upon the foundation of our footwork on the court through various exercises. Reiterating the strategies in doubles so that we can become more fierce during competition. Re-emphasizing confidence and the willingness to go for every single shot in our singles game so that everyone can achieve their personal best.”
Le Moyne will face off against St. Rose on Sunday, March 10.
