Le Moyne Dolphins basketball drop two this week

The Le Moyne women’s basketball team started the week by traveling to St. Rose to play the second matchup of the Upstate Challenge for the 2013 season on Wednesday, Feb. 6. The game was close but a quick run by the Golden Knights to start the second half led them to defeat the Dolphins 61-54. The win earned the Golden Knights a half-point in the Upstate Challenge, the yearlong competition between St. Rose and Le Moyne.

Two freshmen young guns, Lauren Price and Maggie Brown led the ladies in scoring and rebounds. The freshman registered 22 of the team’s 54 points. Price had 13 points off the bench and five rebounds. Brown collected nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Emily Greer also tallied 11 points and seven rebounds.

Le Moyne started the game with a 7-0 run in the first three minutes. Both teams traded runs throughout the game but ultimately the Golden Knights sealed the deal after going on an eight-point run to build upon their six-point lead with eight minutes left in the game.

“We knew it was going to be a close game and a difficult atmosphere to play in, said junior guard Maddy McKnight. “We really played well in the first half but couldn’t finish in the second.  They hit big shots and we couldn’t do the same.  Again we still fought and that is what we will continue to do.”

After their Wednesday game the Dolphins returned home to play a tough Assumption team on Saturday, February 9th. The Greyhounds topped Le Moyne 67-50 in the Northeast-10 matchup. Brown led the Dolphins in scoring with thirteen points followed by sophomore guard Alex Marple, who registered eleven points off the bench.  The 15-6 Assumption team had control the entire game.

Even though the ladies dropped both games this week McKnight had some positive words for the future. “The season is far from over and everyday in practice we work hard and push each other.  We all want to get better as individuals and as a team!”

The Lady Dolphins returned to action on Tuesday, Feb. 12 against American International at home at 5:30 p.m. The next game will take place this Saturday, Feb. 16 against New Haven on their court, at 1:30 p.m.
