The women’s soccer team hit the road this week to face two tough opponents. On Tuesday, Oct. 16, the women traveled to Adelphi University to compete against the Panthers. Then on Friday, Oct. 19 they traveled to Vermont where they rallied against St. Michael’s College on Saturday.
Le Moyne lost 2-0 to Adelphi on Tuesday. Adelphi scored their first goal after just six minutes of play. The Dolphins struggled to gain control for much of the game. Le Moyne played a hard game but with 3 minutes and 15 seconds left in the games the Panthers scored again. Freshman goalkeeper, Tori Corsaro, had eleven saves in the loss to Adelphi.
The Saturday, Oct. 20 game was much more of a fight. The women came out strong but ultimately fell in overtime by a score of 2 to 1. Within the first 29 minutes of the game, Le Moyne got on the scoreboard with a goal by senior midfielder, Gabriele Ariola. Ariola fired a shot from 30 yards out that seemed to be a little high but hit the bottom of the crossbar and dropped in.
Le Moyne played strong defense for almost thirty-four minutes until St. Michael’s got on the board. Then 1 minute and 31 seconds into overtime, St. Michael’s buried the game-winning goal to send Le Moyne back home.
Ariola’s goal tied her career best for goals in a season with five and was her 15th of her career. Her 15th of her career tied her for the 13th most in Le Moyne Women’s soccer program history.
Le Moyne is now 2-9-4 for the season and 0-9-4 in the NE-10. Although the women’s record isn’t the strongest, team members remain positive. Senior, Lauren Pospeich and Gabby Ariola had a few thoughts to add. Pospeich said “Our record unfortunately does not reflect our team’s talent or ability,” and Ariola said, “Although we aren’t where we thought we would be at the end of the season, we have a lot to be proud of and we have grown as a team.”
Remaining positive is what keeps the women’s team focused as they move into the final stretch of their 2012 season. Le Moyne returns to the field on Saturday, against St. Anselm at noon.
