Intramural sports began again last week, with 13 soccer teams, 14 volleyball teams and three floor hockey teams. Floor hockey is the newest addition to the intramural sports line-up.
In the fall, soccer and volleyball were also offered, with many students actively participating.
“We did soccer twice because students have high demand for it, and we might as well do it again if students are interested,” said David Willard, recreation, fitness and wellness coordinator at Le Moyne.
Shannon Driscoll, a graduate student at Le Moyne, runs the intramural sports program. She commented on how the spring intramural season is going so far.
“It is awesome. Number-wise, it is great and there is tremendous success with all of the students who want to take part,” Driscoll said. “Our last sport, basketball, was a huge tournament with 24 teams total.”
This year, Willard and Driscoll have been trying to offer more sports options for students to choose from. They offered kickball, but not enough students were interested, so they put in another season of soccer instead.
“We offer sports that people want to play, and listen more to what the students want. We had 10 weeks of basketball because of the number of students, and we had 18 soccer teams in the fall. We always try to put in different things, but if we don’t get the numbers we go to the staple sports,” Driscoll said.
Intramural sports usually run until finals week, with the final playoffs and championships falling a week before finals. This semester, the final championship games will be on April 30 and May 2. Volleyball and floor hockey play on Monday and Wednesday nights, with soccer playing Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
To get involved with intramural sports, students can go to the team sign-ups which are usually advertised through the LSPB Stall Street Journal.
“I also contact past teams to see if they want to play again,” Driscoll added.
Intramural sports are a great way to not only meet new people, but to try different sports in a fun and competitive way. Driscoll and Willard have worked together this year to provide the students with sports that they are interested in, and to even include many different options that help the intramural program at Le Moyne grow.
