Le Moyne’s Ultimate Frisbee team will be having one of their major tournaments this Saturday, the Bone Chiller. This is the first time that Le Moyne has held a Frisbee tournament on home turf.
According to captain and club president Matt Dowgiallo, the team has been focusing on its offense to prepare for this major tournament.
“We have a very athletic group this year and that has resulted in great defense for most of our games. There are a lot of people in the club new to organized Ultimate Frisbee so getting solid offensive formations has been our main goal,” Dowgiallo said.
The tournament will begin Saturday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m., with each subsequent game lasting for about an hour and a half. Play will be held on three different fields around the Athletic Center, one being the soccer practice fields.
Siena, Hamilton, Clarkson, Brockport, Nazareth, Scranton and Roberts Wesleyan will be competing in the Round Robin Tournament format, competing in intense play, rain or shine. Hamilton College reigns as the toughest competition for the tournament, having won the Division III Championship last year in Frisbee.
There will be tents set up amongst the various fields for spectators, complete with music and food. A barbecue will be held at noon with free food for all those at the field. Also, the team will be selling tournament t-shirts and Frisbees for people to take with them after the games.
Known as the Green Goblins, the ‘Phins Frisbee team has grown over the fall semester, working together to have more of an edge over other schools in tournament play.
Dowgiallo feels the team will have a good chance to “place towards the middle of the pack. We have improved a lot since last year, but we still have room to grow. The point of the tournament is to have a good time.”
Frisbee is a fast-paced sport, with quick passing and running down the field. The tournament play will be an exciting match between the various competitive schools in attendance. This will be the last major event for the Green Goblins this fall, who look to be hosting a few home scrimmages in the spring.
With the season coming to a close, Dowgiallo feels the team has been successful this year thus far and looks forward to the tournament play this Saturday.
“The sport of Ultimate Frisbee is based on what’s called the ‘spirit of the game’ and is entirely self-officiated by the players,” Dowgiallo said. “Win or lose, the game is all about having fun, working as a team, and creating unforgettable memories.”
