#DolphinsLiveWell: Spring into spring!

We are experiencing a multitude of “springs” this week: returning from spring break, having our clocks spring forward, the first day of spring is coming up, and spring-like temperatures are all around us. It would be very easy to start experiencing spring fever, especially as we look forward to that traditional Le Moyne rite-of-spring: Dolphy Day! The challenge is that we are only at mid-semester and have a lot to take care of before spring semester ends.

So, with all of these wonderful distractions around us, how do we maintain our motivation and focus not only for mid-term exams, papers, and projects, but in setting ourselves up to be successful throughout the remainder of the year? With luck, you’ve had a chance to decompress from school and maybe even get a little R&R. You are back recharged and ready to go! A great way to ensure that the rest of your semester goes smoothly is to create a master schedule: include assignments, exams, papers, projects, and other deadlines. You can add in work, athletics, club activities, and anything else you need to take care of from now through mid-May. Believe me, just the process of organizing will help you feel accomplished and keep you motivated. As we move through Easter break and into April, checking items off of your master schedule will create a positive feedback loop and continue to enhance your feelings of accomplishment and focus.

Now, even with all of this organization, you will still experience moments of feeling like, “WHAAAT!!” One way to minimize your stress is by finding ways to hang on to that “vacation mode”.  When you start feeling overwhelmed with school, work, and all of the other responsibilities you have, find some time in your day for a “mindful moment”. Close your eyes, take a deep breath through your nose, and as you slowly exhale through your mouth, visualize a fun or peaceful or content moment you experienced over this recent break…or maybe another! Doing this exercise is like taking a mini-vacation in your mind. Engage in this breathing and visualization for a minute and be aware of how your heart slows down, your breathing becomes more regular and your thoughts stop racing. The beauty of this exercise is that you can do it anywhere you are and you’ll instantly be transported to a calmer, more peaceful time in your life…anytime you need it! So when the stress of the semester starts getting to you, find your “happy place” and just BREATHE!
