Seriously, no one has sent me an inquiry for being next years Cheers and Jeers writer. Honestly, I can’t say I blame you. I wouldn’t want people yelling at me for what I write. Then again, I don’t really care what people have to say. From all of the individuals I’ve cheered for this year, I’ve received nothing but praise and thanks. And to those jeered: well, get over it. Good luck to the next writer because coming up with these each week is not an easy task. You’ll need a sense of humor and be able to make new friends quickly, because quite frankly, you’re going to piss a lot of people off in the process. So have fun!
Cheer of the Week: The “study” day
Let me ask you a question: how many of you actually study on “study day?” If you said yes, congrats, you are actually responsible and care about your grades. For those who said no, you’re suffering from senioritis, or junioritis, or it’s-the-end-of-the-semester-and-I-wanna-go-home-itis. I’m sure I’m not alone in thanking Le Moyne for giving us this one day to recuperate and get ready for finals week. Everyone is already on edge and one step away from institutionalizing themselves. Well, at least I am. If the library is too crowded, I’ll share some spots that I’ve found that will help you get some peace and quiet. If you are fortunate enough to have swipe access; the mac lab in Reilly is open 24/7, and the science center usually has some open rooms. Or, if you’re smart, you’ll study in your room which will ensure a quiet place, unless you have roommates who aren’t studying either. Good luck with finals!
Jeer of the Week: The end
This is it guys and girls. We have reached the end of the semester. Some of us are graduating and moving on to greener pastures. The others are trying to build upon this year and make the coming one better. Nevertheless, I think everyone is just about ready to get out of here. There are too many people complaining about how much things suck. Well, suck it up! One more week and you’ll be home. I want to reflect back on the last year or so and thank you for putting up with me. I’ve written some controversial columns and other columns have generated some huge buzz. But writing for The Dolphin has shown me how to handle certain situations and how to approach handling them. When I was asked to write this section, I was reluctant at first because I knew I was going to piss off a lot of people, but I’m happy I did it. If people know me personally, they know I’m not afraid to make them angry, and that’s exactly what I did. And if you didn’t enjoy my sections, you’ll have a new writer to yell at next year.
Jeers to the extra day of classes
We run into this scenario far too often. You’ll go through the year with classes Monday through Friday with the occasional break in between. That break will usually place classes on a weird day. For example, winter break will begin on a Wednesday, and you won’t have classes Thursday and Friday. That’s not a big deal because it simply means the work week is shorter. What I’m complaining about is why we have one more day of classes on Monday, a day off… I mean a day to prepare for finals, then start finals on Wednesday. If it were up to me, end classes on Friday, study over the weekend, and start finals on Monday. Having one extra day of classes on the worst day of the week makes everyone miserable, especially when motivation is already at an all-time low.
Cheers to the class of 2014
We’ve bled green and yellow for four years now. After enduring the challenges of undergrad life, we’re graduating in less than 20 days. I bet all of you are reflecting back to freshman year: walking into your first class, meeting your first roommate and thinking the cafe food was actually real food. Just think of everything that has happened in these past four years. There wasn’t a renovated dining hall or science center. There wasn’t a school of business that resembles the NY stock exchange. There wasn’t a pub. There wasn’t a 1.3 million dollar office suite that is now a vacant room. We helped create all of this. Now we pave the way for the class of 2015 and beyond. So live up these next two weeks and try not to do anything too stupid because you still have to graduate. So with this final cheer, peace out Le Moyne.
