Five Films To Watch in March

A Wrinkle in Time

Based on the 1962 novel of the same name, the film centers around a young girl named Meg Murry (Storm Reid) who learns that her father Dr. Alex Murray is being held captive on a far away planet. Meg Murry works with her highly intelligent younger brother Charles (Deric McCabe), her new friend and fellow student Calvin O’Keeffe (Levi Miller), and three astral travelers, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who, to save him. The film is directed by Ava Duvernay and its star studded cast includes Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Peña, André Holland, Rowan Blanchard, David Oyelowo, and Bellamy Young. Release date: March 9th.

 

Tomb Raider

Many people familiar with the Tomb Raider franchise know it because of its popular video games, which feature a character named Lara Croft who ventures on different journeys to find lost artifacts. The franchise had two feature films released in 2001 & 2003 respectively, that starred Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. Flash forward fifteen years later, the reboot will star another Academy Award winner, Alicia Vikander, as Lara Croft. The film focuses on Lara Croft’s first expedition in hopes of finding out how and why her father disappeared. The film is directed by Roar Uthaug and also stars Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Kristin Scott Thomas in supporting roles. Release date: March 16th.

 

Pacific Rim: Uprising

The sequel to the film by recent Oscar-winner Guillermo Del Toro, Pacific Rim will take place 10 years after the first film. John Boyega, no stranger to big blockbuster action films, will portray the son of General Pentecost (portrayed by Idris Elba in the first film), Jake Pentecost and it’s up to him to save the world with the help of giant robot suits and a supporting cast that consists of Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, Rinko Kikuchi, Jing Tian, and Adria Arjona.  The sequel is directed by Steven S. DeKnight. Release date: March 23rd.

 

Isle of Dogs

This animated film is set in future Japan, where dogs have been isolated on an island due to a “canine flu”. A Japanese boy named Atari goes on a quest to the island to look for his dog, Spots. On his journey, he is helped by other dogs, Chief, Rex, Boss, Duke, and King help him find Spots. The film is directed by creative genius Wes Anderson, and is his first animated feature film since Fantastic Mr. Fox. Its star studded cast includes Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Bob Balaban, Frances McDormand, and Yoko Ono. Release date: March 23rd.

 

Ready Player One

This film is set in the year 2045, where Earth happens to be plagued by overpopulation, contamination, defilement, and environmental change. To  get away from their destruction, individuals take part in the virtual reality universe of OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation), where they can take part in various exercises for work, training, and diversion. The film centers around protagonist Wade Watts, whose goal is to find an easter egg left in the video game by the creator of OASIS, James Halliday, before any other player does, because whoever finds it will have access to Halliday’s $500 billion fortune. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and its video game virtual world is filled with cultural references to other franchises like The Iron Giant, Lara Croft, Back to the Future, and Mad Max. Release date: March 29th.
