- Bojack Horseman
This Netflix animated series revolves around a horse named Bojack Horseman, who also happens to be a washed-up celebrity. In order to become relevant again, he decides to write an autobiography detailing the events that took place in his life. Bojack Horseman struggles as an alcoholic and can be seen as rude to many people around him. The show does a great job at highlighting depression, drug and alcohol abuse, and the effects of fame. The show takes a while to find itself in season 1, but the succeeding seasons are on par with some of the greatest TV shows. All episodes can be seen on Netflix.
- Rick and Morty
Rick and Morty is an Adult Swim animated series that follows the adventures of alcoholic scientist Rick Sanchez and his teenage grandson Morty Smith. Each episode is like a mini sci-fi adventure. The creators were inspired by Back to the Future and that’s easy to see, considering its two protagonists. The show has managed to gain a cult like following and was even able to influence McDonald’s to bring back it’s Szechuan sauce after it was referenced in one of its episodes. Episodes can be seen on Hulu and the Adult Swim app.
- Bob’s Burgers
Bob’s Burgers centers around Bob, a husband and father of 3 who owns a restaurant that his family helps him run. The show is known for its deadpan humor and incredible voice acting. In fact, the show has become so popular that it is actually going to have it’s own feature film released on July, 17, 2020. Bob and his family members have their own unique characteristics that make them likeable including Bob’s irritable temper, Linda’s over-optimistic attitude, Tina’s teenage hormones, Gene’s innocence and ignorance, and Louise’s manipulative personality. Another thing that separates this show from other animated series is that it does not need to involve crude humour to be funny. All episodes can be seen on Hulu and the current season can be seen on Sundays at 7:30 pm on Fox.
- Archer
FX/FXX comedy Archer, centers around a self-centered spy who’s only interested in himself. The first four seasons have Archer working at a spy agency run by his mother, but throughout the course of the series, the setting has been relocated to different settings. The series has wonderful voice acting and has some of the wittiest writing on TV. Critics happen to love the show as well, as it has won the Critic’s Choice Television Award for Best Animated Series four year in a row. All seasons can be viewed on Netflix.
- The Simpsons
Despite being on for 29 seasons now, The Simpsons somehow still remains to be one of the best animated shows on television. Already considered by many to be the greatest show of all-time, The Simpsons still manages to be funny and inventive. Its subtle popular culture references are one of the highlights of the show, as well as its character development. If you’ve seen enough episodes of the show, one can write an entire autobiography of multiple different characters. All episodes can be viewed on the FX app and you can find the current season on Hulu or at Sundays at 8:00 pm on Fox.
