Troye Sivan: Pop’s New It-Boy
YouTube star and now young music sensation, Troye Sivan, is officially on the scene. His debut album Blue Neighbourhood plucks up every pop seed and grows a garden in your ears. Fans already had a taste of Neighbourhood when Sivan released his EP titled Wild earlier this year. Pop synths and tales of his youth spring into every track seamlessly.
Sivan’s voice is as soothing as it gets. His songs are never rowdy or rough. All seem to have a cohesive flow to them, evoking pretty emotional pulls. “Fools” deals with Sivan’s first love. Coming out as gay and dealing with self-acceptance were two main themes on this album. “I am tired of this place, I hope people change
I need time to replace what I gave away,” Sivan croons as subtle piano chords back his every word. When introducing this song to his fans, he said, “‘Fools’ is about that moment when that naivety catches up to you.”
Another personal song is, “Ease” featuring alt-pro’s, Broods. Sivan and lead singer of Broods, Georgia, have impeccable harmonies that truly make you believe you are listening to angels in a choir. The lyrics illustrate conversations that Troye used to have with his mother while he was busy on the road and living his new life. “Ease” reminds you of the love your family has for you; “And my mommy, she can’t put down the phone, and stop asking how I’m doing all alone, alone, but the truth is the stars are falling, ma”. He then goes on to sing about what makes him feel better, “Take me back to the basics and the simple life, tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease, your touch, my comfort, and my lullaby.”
Songs like, “The Quiet”, “DKLA”, and “Suburbia” have more of an electro-pop feel to them. One of Sivan’s specialties. The contrast between his soft, innocent voice, and harsh beats make for a unique sound that fits where most pop is headed in today’s music scene.
Sivan is all the rage these days. Taylor Swift tweeted him support saying, “WILD IS STUNNING AND AWESOME. (YES CAPS LOCK IS NECESSARY HERE.) #EPgoals.” Sam Smith also tweeted and said, “Everybody needs to go out today and purchase this little beauty of an album.” At just a young 20 years old, Sivan is already getting praise from some of the biggest names in the business. Blue Neighbourhood was the perfect entrance into his new musical journey.
