Magic Isn’t Dead

I went and saw Cinderella this past weekend and it was absolutely fantastic. Everyone should go out and see this updated version of a Disney classic. The director did a great job of capturing the old-time feel of the original movie.

I was very impressed with the casting of the movie. If you’re a nerd like me, and a fan of both Game of Thrones (new season starting April 12!) and Downton Abbey this is the movie for you. The cast features the handsome Richard Madden who played Rob Stark on GOT and a few Downton Abbey regulars. Of course, the star of the show is Lily James. She plays Lady Rose on DA, but her rise to the silver screen is impressive. James was absolutely perfect for this role, and executed it with absolute grace.

Not only did the heroes deliver, but so did the villains. Cate Blanchett played the perfect evil stepmother. She was equally conniving as she was nasty. She took the evilness to a really “real” level. Adding to the levels of injustice of the movie, the step sisters didn’t fail to disappoint. With the updated version, Disney decided to make the step sisters stupid and ignorant. This ignorance leads to their horrible treatment of Cinderella. You will also find out why she is called Cinderella, but no spoilers here!

I am a big fan of the whole story of Cinderella and I’m really glad that Disney kept it pretty much the same. They tend to use a little too much poetic license with the updated versions of the classics. However, this tale is pretty much true to the core. They managed to make it seem even more magical than a cartoon which is a pretty big feat. Just wait until you see the creation of the carriage and the servers, you will not be disappointed, believe me!

Another beautiful creation? THOSE SHOES. Disney’s new technology has created what I think must be the most beautiful glass slipper ever! As Helena Bonham Carter says in the movie, they’re surprisingly comfortable! What more could a girl ask for? Besides the hunky Richard Madden showing up at my doorstep…just saying.

Possibly the best part of the whole movie is the message that it sends. This updated Cinderella sends a message of tolerance in adverse situations. It reminds you to be kind, even in times when it is hard. It is very important to stress these teachings in these troubled times. So I will leave you with the wise words of Cinderella’s mother: “Where there is kindness, there is goodness. And where there is goodness, there is magic. Have courage and be kind.”
