Oscars 2013: All about the fashion

This year, the red carpet at the Oscars (held this past Sunday,Feb. 24) was one of the finest, with each star putting together a classic and unforgettable ensemble. There was no single trend that was exhibited, but instead, each dress showed something different from the next.

The most exciting arrival of the night was the Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence. I didn’t think that she could have topped her stunning red Calvin Klein collection dress from 2011, but in my opinion, the new face of Dior was the best dressed of the night, choosing a pale pink, voluminous Dior gown that exuded pure elegance and grace.

Amanda Seyfried was a close second, choosing an embellished Alexander McQueen halter gown. The beading on the gown was so simple and classic, a perfect choice to end Seyfried’s award-season run. Another ensemble I loved was Samantha Barks’s simple black Valentino gown. The addition of a large pendant and beautiful updo pulled her whole look together.

The most disappointing look of the evening was unfortunately Anne Hathaway, who usually stuns on the red carpet. Valentino tends to be the designer choice of Hathaway, yet at the last minute she switched to the pale pink Prada gown instead. The rose color of the gown was beautiful, yet the cut was just confusing. The front was so bland, with the back having an odd low cut and slit up the side. Overall, it was not the smartest choice of Hathaway.

The Oscars was a winning night for couples, with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner easily topping the best dressed pair. Both in Gucci, Garner stunned in a ruffled purple gown, with Affleck in a classic bow tie and rugged gruff. Another member of the “Argo” team, George Clooney was easily one of my favorite dressed men of the night, and was even better with his girlfriend Stacy Keibler by his side. Clooney wore a classic Giorgio Armani suit, with Keibler wearing a sparkling, silver embellished Naeem Khan dress.

Hugh Jackman was also one of the best dressed men of the night, wearing a Tom Ford suit. My favorite part of this ensemble was the shawl lapel of the tuxedo, which he finished off with a satin bowtie.

The standout part of Oscar fashion this year was, by far, the jewelry chosen by the starlets. My favorite trend was one started by Rachel Zoe on her two clients, Lawrence and Anne Hathaway. Zoe had both of them wear their necklaces backward, with a simple silver pearl strand draped behind Lawrence’s gown and a large beaded necklace on the back of Hathaway’s. This vintage look was so different from what has been seen on the red carpet lately, and made a huge difference in the overall look of these two dresses. Big drop earrings were another stunner on the carpet: Jennifer Hudson chose a bold turquoise hue, while Zoe Saldana went with simple silver jewel drop sparklers.

The nude lip was one of the most frequent lipstick choices for many of the stars, including Halle Berry, Salma Hayek and Lawrence. Lawrence chose Dior’s nude lipstick in Beige Casual #222, the perfect balance between her smoky eyes. The nude lip is a big must for the spring, and is a great finish to any look.
