Nat’s Guide to Glamour: Sun Protection Factor

It is what we look at every day. There is no hiding it! Our face is very important to protect and take care of at any stage in life. Not only do we want to stay young forever when it comes to our age, but we would also love to keep our skin clear and blemish-free for a lifetime. The usage of sunscreen is absolutely essential to achieve clear skin forever. Forget all those pricey anti-aging products — sunscreen is the best skin care product out there!

While many people associate sunscreen as something that you only have to use during the summer months or on Caribbean vacations, it is highly recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with any sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 every day of the year — even if you’re just walking out of your dorm to class!

As far as the sun goes with harsh UVA-UVB rays, excess sun exposure is skin’s No. 1 enemy.  When we are young, we want to have a gorgeous, glowing tan complexion, but after reading about the damage it can do to our health, it may not seem that important after all.

Sun exposure causes premature aging, including wrinkles, loss of elasticity and hyperpigmentation.  Worse, as we all know, overexposure often causes deadly forms of skin cancer.

So how bad is tanning for you? And where does the tan pigment even come from? By lying in the tanning bed just one time, you are increasing your chance of skin cancer by 15 percent! Some use the excuse that we need vitamin D, but in reality, we get enough of that walking from our car to the grocery store.

The tan pigment to the skin is caused by melanocyte cells protecting themselves. Lying under harsh UVB rays, truly hurts these cells. When color rises to the surface, the melanocyte cells are essentially trying to tell the person doing the damage to stop.  As bizarre and strange as that might sound, it is the truth. It is important to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 in the winter and 30 in the summer.

Obtaining great skin is about changing and adapting to a healthy lifestyle that takes time and patience.  Skin care is certainly a long daily routine, but it is important to remember to add a broad-spectrum sunscreen as the very last step.
